Fattoria di Camporomano is located in Versilia, one of the most beautiful areas of Tuscany. Behind it rise the majestic Apuane Alps, while it overlooks lake Massaciuccoli and the fields that stretch towards Pisa on one side and the coast towards Liguria on the other.

The ancient roman road Aemilia Scauri, which dates as far back as 190 BC, runs through the property and its olive groves. Built under the ruler Marco Emilio Scauro, it connected Pisa, Lucca and the ancient town of Luni to the main causeway, the Consolare Aurelia, which ran from Rome to Gaul.

A military and commercial post, a castrum, stood by the road in ancient times, at the core of what later became the estate of Campo Romano. A tiny church, S. Maria in Campo Romano, was built there in the middle ages and was later incorporated in one of the main buildings erected in the 1500's. Over the centuries, the property has belonged to several of Lucca's most noble families: the Cenami, the Mazzarosa and the Garzoni, who made the farm their summer retreat.

Under the Garzoni, who also owned a well-known palace and historical garden in Collodi (http://www.pinocchio.it/giardinogarzoni/), the farm acquired the architectural layout it has today, and it is now listed in the prestigious register of national Historic Residences.

The estate covers an area of about 50 hectares of olive groves that surround the old rural buildings, which are now beautifully renovated guesthouses. Their style was typical of the area as were the red and ochre stripes that decorate them , also used as background in the Garzoni's coat of arms.

The main villa, with its chapel and enclosed garden, is still home to the same family, which manages this charming �Agriturismo�, complete with a swimming pool and soon a golf practice range. The farm's beautiful cattle grazes under the 9000 olive trees of this centuries-old grove which yields excellent organic extravirgin olive oil, cold-pressed by the original ancient millstones, still used in the original 'frantoio'.

A lawn is at the heart of the estate, surrounded by majestic horsechestnut trees that provide welcome shade during torrid summers. From it a path leads to a hidden viewpoint which overlooks the coast, the lake of Massaciuccoli and Pisa, in the distance, with its leaning tower. On a clear day one can distinctly see the tuscan islands of Elba, Capraia and Gorgona; beyond them, the mountains of Corse.

Campo Romano is the perfect choice for a relaxing vacation, as a base to travel to the many points of attraction in the area: the beaches of Viareggio, Camaiore and Forte dei Marmi, art cities like Florence, Pisa and Lucca, the great areas of Chianti, Lunigiana, Garfagnana and Cinque Terre, the historical villages of Pietrasanta, Camaiore and Torre del Lago Puccini.
